Favourite family food-haunts in Brighton

This week I realised there are a few places in Brighton we visit time and again. They may not be gastronomic wonders. The interior design might not be perfect, but they’re family favourites and I wanted to share them. We love Marrocco’s on Hove seafront. Standard, good quality, child-friendly Italian food. It’s always busy and serves great pizza and fantastic ice-cream. On a sunny school night, when we can’t be bothered to cook, we’ll go down for a treat followed by a beachcomb or just a stroll on the pebbles while the sun sets. The kids are then rolled...

Seven Bees at St Georges Church – a child/work friendly cafe in Kemp town

I wrote this post for Brighton Mums when we were looking for a relaxed, child-friendly meeting and work space. Seven Bees at St Georges Church is a beautiful, light airy space offering great food, good coffee and a kids play area along with WiFi. We run a Parents Pow-wow there once a month (currently on a Thurday). It’s a very informal opportunity for freelance and self-employed parents (and their children) to meet. We need to work, but luckily our work is portable and can be done from anywhere with WiFi and good coffee.  For many small business owners and...

Easy recipes for when you wish you didn’t have to cook.

Tonight I made an easy pasta dinner without frills or fuss because I’m premenstrual, have a cold and am exhausted. If I could have been bothered, could afford it, or thought the kids might eat it I would have got a takeaway. But I couldn’t/can’t/don’t so didn’t. Also after a half term of crappy meals and junk food, I think the girls need something nutritious. I waited till they were really hungry and gave them some broccoli before the pasta too. Without someone to mop my brow, I need something comforting and therapeutic. Everyone should have a backup of...

Food Shopping, brand loyalty (and a ranty bit too for good measure)

I just got off the phone to Asda.  I have paid £24 for a three-month delivery pass, and every single delivery has had something missing (so I have to go to another shop, which I then may as well have gone to in the first place), or is late.  Or both. They can’t refund the pass apparently. I told them they can do what they want – they are making up their own rules.  Yes, actually mate, you can!  I make up my own rules too (can I have chocolate tonight?  I promised myself no, but actually, YES I...

Foodie fiddling

I made this beany shepherds pie a few weeks ago, along with these special little-uns, for my little-uns.  I did the decoration with a cardboard stencil and some paprika and they both ate it all.
